WHITBY, ONTARIO LIVING ~ Community Spotlight Tour
(Part of the Durham Region community spotlight tours)

Whitby, Ontario Living - Linda Jackson, Sutton Group Heritage Realty
Originally settled in 1800 then, founded in 1836, the town of Whitby, Ontario
was named after the  costal town of Whitby located in North East (Yorkshire) England.  Whitby follows the naming trend of many towns in the Durham area, most likely due to the fact that the original surveyor was from northern England.

The Town of Whitby, Ontario has a current population of over 111,000 people and growing.  The expansion continues both in the residential areas; with steady new home construction and, in industry; with major companies such as Atlantic Packaging, Durham College, Lakeridge Health, Johnson Controls, Ameristeel, McGraw Hill Ryerson, Lear Corporation and Patheon Pharmaceutical within its boundaries.

Whitby, Ontario Waterfront2 - Linda Jackson, Sutton Group Heritage RealtyNo shortage of activities here in Whitby, Ontario, you will always find something to see and do.  Why not try Music in the Park, a New Years Eve family skate, the Town Carnival or Movies in the Park just to name a few?  Also, each July, we have Whitby Harbour Days down at Port Whitby Harbour that include live entertainment, tall ship cruises, fireworks and more!

Whitby, Ontario Sports Centre - Linda Jackson, Sutton Group Heritage RealtyWhitby takes its sports and recreation just as seriously as its good times, therefore, it is no surprise to find some of the best sports facilities and organizations around.  It is home to Iroquois Park sports centre, a first class facility and one of the largest minor sports centres in North America.  Whitby's three major sports complexes alone offer a total of 9 ice rinks, 2 tennis courts, 2 skate board parks, 5 baseball diamonds and 3 swimming pools.
